STIKOM Surabaya Learns about Advertising in the Digital Era
Having dreams to be art directors, graphic designers, animators, copywriters, illustrators, and so forth, the students majoring in Visual Communication Design (DKV) of STIKOM (The Higher School of Informatic Management & Computer Engineering) Surabaya visited Fortune Indonesia on August 27, 2014 to learn about the details of the advertising industry out in real life.
Sigit Prayitno Yosep as the supervisor said that the knowledge gained at campus must be complemented with an overview of the real work in the advertising world. “We chose Fortune Indonesia since it is a well known and bona fide advertising agency in Indonesia,” said Sigit.
They then met their objective in the session of presentation and discussion with Luddy Gilang Prayogi as the digital art director of Fortune Indonesia. Luddy delivered the material entitled ‘Digital Age Rockstar’ before the group of students. He explained that along with the development of sophisticated technology, the advertising world has been expanding on the digital realm that now serves as a tool.
“When we are talking of graphic design, it is now very broad in scope. This is no longer the era in which the audience is just fixated on the created ads, they need more than that. Two-way communication must be established,” said Luddy exposing the material to the students.
The existence of the digital, Luddy continued, expands the opportunities for advertising graduate students to be productive. High creativity in designing, playing with words, and media planning is required in the digital era. The presence of two-way communication is also believed to be able to determine the success of ad creativity.
Not only did STIKOM students gain the knowledge, they also got the exposure about the world of work in Fortune Indonesia. Hanny Nurahmawati as Marketing Communications Manager of Fortune Indonesia illustrated the making process of a client’s advertisement. Hanny said, in advertising, the creative team is also assisted by the account executive team who bridge them with clients.
Fikri Suwandi, one of the students, was satisfied with this visit. He felt that the material presented is very useful and inspiring for the students to be creative both when studying at college and later when competing in the world of work.
“The speakers are great and they have a lot of experience so the knowledge is a great benefit and gives me idea of my future job and of the industry I’ll be engaged in. I hope the experience and knowledge we have gained here will support the activities in our course,” he said after the visit.
