Healthy Body Happy Heart by Exercising
Nur Rochim Achmad- Human Capital Development Director of Fortune Indonesia
Amidst the hustle and bustle of work and organization that he joins in, the leader of HCD division always takes the time to pursue his hobby of doing various types of outdoor sports, ranging from hiking, jogging, to off-road cycling. If he wants a more challenging track, oftentimes he also goes cycling on the cycling tracks in Puncak. Here’s an excerpt of an interview with Nur Rochim.
How did you start working at Fortune?
I joined Fortune in 2002 as Senior HCD Manager and General Affair. At that time, Fortune Indonesia has just conducted an IPO (Initial Public Offering), so it is necessary to strengthen the organization including its Human Capital. One of Fortune leaders contacted me directly and asked me to join.
What made you decide to join Fortune?
Fortune Indonesia is the best and only advertising company that has done the IPO. At that time, rarely did a company dare to enter the stock market, because once it enters the stock market, it must be ready to meet the principles of GCG (Good Corporate Governance) and must be able to really care for all their stakeholders. It means Fortune Indonesia is a company that is ready and mature. I also feel Fortune Indonesia has a great target to move forward. That’s what made me interested in joining.
What are the highs and lows of working for fifteen years as a Fortuner?
I think the culture established by the Founders of Fortune is strongly felt here, which is the comfortable and familial atmosphere. I see there is almost no gap among Fortuners, everybody is able to work together and solve problems well. Respect for each other is highlighted at work. So the relationship among the people here is very cordial. Talking about the lows, some problems do arise within the organization but it’s usually only concerning technical matters. Then, because Fortune Indonesia is an open company, some of the rules related to the application of GCG principles are sometimes challenging. All the rules we run within the company must be aligned with the government rules. Nevertheless, we are still able to overcome the challenges, thanks to the good culture.
What achievements are you targeting for HCD Fortune in 2017?
In 2017, my target is that HCD will better support the business achievement. As we all know, since 2015 the advertising business competition is getting tighter so the company has to go the extra mile. HCD wants to be a business partner for every division so that Fortuners feel well embraced by the company and the Fortuners’ motivation is increasing. We have interacted with the Fortuners to disseminate the HCD programs; we also regularly remind the leaders to take good care of Fortuners. The HCD team focuses on the balance between human development and the target of each division so that there won’t be any overlap.
Your personal target for 2017?
Actually, this target is not only for the year 2017 but for the future and beyond. I want my life to be more useful for others. I want to make a balanced contribution to every element of my life be it health, work, organization, social, education, family, and religion.
Activities aside from work?
I am an active member of some communities, namely PPPI (Indonesian Association of Advertising Agencies), Portal Infaq, Mosque Management, Gen Pro (Generasi Profesional), Community of Finance and HR Heads of Advertising Agencies, and sports community. Besides being active in my communities, I am also teaching at the University of Indonesia as a lecturer of Internal Communications, but I have no schedule for this semester.
Favorite pastime?
I’m crazy about outdoor sports. I’m a cyclist, I love off road riding in certain areas especially in BSD area because there is Jalur Pipa Gas that can be used as off road track. Once in a while, I go cycling off road to Puncak. In Jakarta, it is difficult to find a suitable track. I also join BSD Mountain Bike community, an off road biking community. In addition to off road cycling, I also enjoy hiking, but not the extreme mountain hiking. I usually go hiking for more or less three days. During the past year, I have also loved jogging and joined a Marathon. The nearest event I’ve been waiting for is to participate in Jakarta Marathon 2017. I have signed up for the 5 km race even though the doctor didn’t allow me due to my age. But I want to change that paradigm; I am sure by practicing regularly and working hard I can do it.
How long have you been in the hobby?
I have loved cycling for quite some time since 2007; I even rode my bike to work. But now I don’t do it anymore since some of my friends at Fortune who used to ride a bike to work have already resigned, and it’s not fun to ride a bike by myself. For hiking and jogging, I just started enjoying them in the past few years.
What motivates you to exercise consistently?
Exercising is the perfect way to make your body healthy and fit in a fun way. In addition, doing sports can help build networks as I am affiliated with some sports communities. I also have certain targets to keep my spirits high by, for instance, joining the Jakarta Marathon for the 5 km race. Next time, I might be interested in participating in the 10 km race so that I will always keep motivated to exercise.
How do you manage the time?
We must be able to balance the activities in order that everything will go harmoniously. The fact that I am active in some activities cannot be separated from my family’s support. My wife also happens to be active in some communities, so we support each other.
Regular activities with family?
I often take my family to do a hobby together. My children happen to also love outdoor activities. So I often take my family to go exercising like on Car Free Day or go hiking on another day. For several times, we have also visited the tourist attractions which have outdoor sports activities like in Ujung Kulon. We went snorkeling to explore the sea. Next, we also have been to Karimun Jawa and Krakatoa. The activities my family does are dominated by outdoor activities.
Life Motto?
To make my life as useful as possible to many people. I think my life would be complete if I can share something with others. Maybe this is also the reason why I am active in some communities; I want to contribute to others. My profession as a lecturer is based on my life principles; I want to share my experience with the students so they can apply it in their respective fields.
