Indonesia Will Be Rolling Out a Trials for The 5G Network at Asian Games 2018

At the Asian Games 2018, hundreds of thousands of fans will spend time at venues and arenas to cheer for their favorite teams, their country or just to attend the event—from all around the world. Expectations are high—and not only on the performance of teams or individuals; people also expect to be able to share and enhance their experiences via their mobile devices.

In the age of digital and mobile consumption of media users expect an experience enhanced by their mobile device allowing us to always be on top of what’s going on, to stay in touch, and to share the experience through videos and photos. Operators have a massive opportunity in making this a reality for their customers through high quality network performance, as well as amplifying a positive brand perception by creating great user experiences.

An announcement made by the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (KOMINFO) highlighted that during the upcoming Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta and Palembang, the people will be able to experience the 5G network, made available only at the locations of the event.

Indonesia will be rolling out trials for the 5G network during the Asian Games event in August 2018. People can only try and use the 5G network at the locations of the Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta, shared Director General of Resources and Equipment of Post and Information Technology of the Ministry of Communication and Informatics Ismail.

Mr. Ismail said that Telkomsel has been appointed as the service provider to build 5G network during the 2018 Asian Games. People who want to test the 5G network must buy a new Telkomsel SIM card. Furthermore, Ismail explained that there are three spectrums of the 5G network, which is 3.5 gigabytes, 26 gigabytes, and 28 gigabytes.

“This is just a trial, it’s not yet commercial,” said Ismail. According to Ismail, the government’s target is to prevent Indonesia from being left behind by other countries. Therefore, Indonesia needs to participate as a global player in building the 5G network.

Building the 5G network cannot be separated from the 4G network system. Both the 4G and 5G  networks are sustainable networks and Indonesia does not necessarily to immediately switch to 5G network and leave the 3G or 4G network.

5G is the next generation of commercial cellular network, set to greatly increase internet connectivity speeds in 2020. One of the main benefits of increased connectivity is the Internet of Things (IoT), which would to allow for seamless integration of devices on a scale never been achieved.
