FORU's Nostalgia in the Exhibition of Two Masters Priyanto-Prinka
For the umpteenth time Gallery Soemardja Faculty of Art and Design (FSRD) of Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) held an art exhibition. The exhibition, which was held on February 24 to March 13, 2014 showed the works of two ‘drawers’: Priyanto S. and S. Prinka. In this occasion, FORU got the opportunity to help support the art event.
The exhibition that carried the theme “Exhibition of Opinion and Legacy: Our Face in the Work of Priyanto – Prinka” was a collection of their works since the 1960s until today. This exhibition aimed to be a source of creativity as well as to enrich the national treasure of pictures, cartoons, and illustrations.
FORU, which was one of the supporters of the exhibition, was invited to look around at the works of the duo artists that were not only in pictures but also in the form of three dimension statues. At the opening, Priyanto explained about the works he created together with his best friend, Prinka.
“Drawing is a tour of hands and minds; roaming without definite destination, wandering at will and catch anything flying around the head,” said Priyanto.
Indra Abidin as FORU’s Main Director sees the duo artists as caricaturists as well as critics who raise voice against social and cultural issues. Priyanto and Prinka appeared in the era of change in 1970. “They are very sensitive to social and cultural issues, their works reflect the feelings of the people,” Indra said enthusiastically.
Reflecting on the cartoon Priyanto has ever made in a magazine about national lard crisis in 1998, the cartoon had led to pros and cons and impacted on the producers of food and beverage packaging. One of those was Nestle that produced formula milk. This condition then became an opportunity for FORU to show its professionalism. For two years, FORU worked to suppress the crisis and normalize the economy.
“Relying only on faith without any experience, Fortune successfully eliminated the crisis of public confidence in the government and producers,” said Indra.
Hopefully, Indra said, there will be more artists who have talents like Priyanto and Prinka, the artists who are not merely working but also being sensitive in observing the social and cultural conditions.” We strongly support the emergence of the artists and critics with sharp eye and heart in highlighting the problems in people’s lives,” he concluded.
