Learning a Success Recipe from the Eagle
Indra Abidin in Creative Industries Seminar Mediakom Trisakti
The rate of Indonesian population growth in Asia has become the trigger of population boom in the country. Therefore, the young generation should have a sure-fire strategy in order to be able to compete in today globalization era. One of the strategies is by fostering entrepreneurship and leadership.
These two strategies became the focus of Indra Abidin presentation in the seminar titled “Mengukir Prestasi Kreatif di Dunia Global,” hosted by Sekolah Tinggi Media Komunikasi (Mediakom) Trisakti, today (18/10). A total of 150 participants seem to be keen on listening to the materials presented. They are the final semester students from Mediakom Trisakti and other universities that have related fields of study, as well as last year high school students.
This seminar aims to wide open the perspective of the participants on the creative potential owned by Indonesia. The seminar materials that often received high acclamation from the participants is expected to boost the success for those who wish to be seriously paved their career in the creative industries, as well as to motivate the participants to continue to excel in both local and international arena.
In a seminar held at the hall of Trisakti Campus C, Indra motivated many participants not to be bored in honing their entrepreneurial and leadership potential. He also explained the quality and attitude that should be owned by an entrepreneur. In addition, the key to success in the global era is to hone our leadership potential.
Indra further explained on the character of the leader through two short films which tell the story of legendary world figures. They are the famous orator, Adolf Hitler, and the first President of the Republic of Indonesia, Sukarno. “His voice sounded like it has magical power. By just listening to it, thousands and even millions of people could follow his words as if they are being hypnotized,” said the owner of Honorary Doctorate degree (2009) from the University of Newcastle, Australia.
Moreover, Indra also said that one should learn more from the nature if they want to be a successful leader. “Especially from the eagle which, since thousands of years ago, has been considered as a leader by its pack,” said Indra. Regarding the character of a successful leader, Indra adopted seven principles from the eagle.
First is to be more sociable with any leading figures. “The eagle always flies with its fellows. This is due to that there is no other bird that can fly as high as an eagle,” said the alumni of Institute Negeri Bandung. Second, focus on your goals and never give up. To continue to have updates on information becomes the third point. “The eagle never eats carrion. This bird would only eat fresh meat,” Indra explained.
The fourth principle is enjoying the challenges, just like an eagle that is never afraid of storms. “Eagle is the only bird that is fond of storms. Other birds are cowered during storm occurrences. Successful leaders will use the challenges he/she encountered as the basis of bigger achievements, not as difficulties,” he explained. Fifth, we should test out our partners’ commitment just like the eagle. An eagle always tests out the resilience of its prospective partner. Lastly, the two final points are regeneration and the courage to change the situation.
Besides Indra, Zafrul Yanni Sjahrial was also one of the speakers in the seminar. Yanni, as how he often called, is a leading marketing and communications consultant from Malaysia, who, until now, has actively served as a Creative Technical Advisor at Fortune Indonesia. He managed to achieve various national and international awards, including being one of the judges in the prestigious national competition for advertising, Citra Pariwara, in 2003.
At the seminar, Yanni described the meaning of creativity in general, not just limited to the scope of marketing. He pointed out few names that have been successfully spawned their fantastic perpetual ideas. One is the creative genius Steve Jobs, the former co-founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Apple Inc., a world famous multinational company which engaged in the field of consumer electronics, computer software, and personal computers.
Yanni also displayed the work of the winners in the field of advertising. For Yanni, being creative is not just a matter of ideas. “But how to realize that idea into a reality,” added the man who has visited more than 60 countries in the world.
The organizers said that they are satisfied with the seminar. “Hopefully, the attendees can go home with their head full motivation and inspiration, so that they will be more eager to look for the opportunities in the creative world,” said Dr. Bayu Prawira Hie, Rector of Mediakom Trisakti.
The participants did confess that they have become more motivated after hearing the presentation of the speakers in the seminar. “This seminar really opens my eyes on how to successfully compete in the creative industries. Moreover, this seminar also presents the work of the winners in the field of advertising. This is a remarkable insight for us who, so far, has only been forged by theories in college,” said Okky Wijaya, 7th semester student, majoring in Graphic Technology, Mediakom Trisakti.
Currently, Mediakom Trisakti is the only higher education institution that has been engaged in Media Communication. Magenta Campus (fuchsia), Mediakom Trisakti’s nickname, has two courses.
