Fortuners’ Donation-Raising Action for Flood Victims in Jakarta
Up to this day, the flood that hit Jakarta still consumes public attention in Indonesia. Flood has caused Jakarta city dwellers to lose possessions, homes, and not a few victims became ill. Help came from all walks of society to ease the burden of the victims. Not to forget the Fortune Group. Through the helping hands of Fortuners (the term for Fortune employees), Fortune participated in raising aid for those in need.
The donation-raising action began on Thursday, January 10, 2013, with the initiative of the Fortune Corporate Secretary Indira Abidin and coordination of the Corporate Communications division. Via electronic mail, Fortuners were invited to collect relief items in a drop box that was placed by the stairs on the first floor of Fortune office, in Galaktika building.
Fortuners’ responses seemed to be very positive, as evidenced by the drop box that was filled immediately with relief items needed by flood victims such as rice, instant noodles, beverages, clothing, sanitary napkins, medicines, blankets, mats, and many more. The entire donation began to be distributed to two areas on Friday, January 11, 2013. They are Flood Post in Kebayoran Lama and the Common Post of Flood Relief 2013# BantuBanjir in Jatipadang.
Kebayoran Lama Flood Post located in Community Unit (RW) 08, Pondok Pinang Village, was opened in January 15, 2013. The region has begun flooding since January 16, at dawn. At that time, the water level that reached 1.25 meters was inundating four neighborhood units (RT) along the river with a total of 160 family heads and 166 lives. When the Corporate Communications division handed over the donation and saw the scene firsthand, the water level reached adults’ waist.
According to Ndan Suhada, the RW secretary as well as the caretaker of flood post, two of the four RT get flooded every year. “Usually, the water began to rise at two to six in the morning when the embankment was opened and started to recede at eleven,” said Ndan. “The most miserable thing is to see the kids. The rest time they should use to sleep is disturbed, because they must always be on guard against flood waters that could come at any time, “he said. Ndan continued, even when the embankment was opened early in the morning they could not sleep because the water got into their homes. “In fact, in addition to basic needs, they should also be entitled to a tranquil sleep,” said Ndan.
Besides Pondok Pinang post, Fortune also channeled the help to the Common Post of Flood Relief 2013 #BantuBanjir on Sa’abun Street No. 20 Jatipadang formed by community organization Gema Damai and Indonesian Market Traders Association (IPPI). Unlike the previous posts, post #BantuBanjir is formed from community initiatives through social media-based social movement initiated by Fahira Idris, an Indonesian activist and entrepreneur who is also active in several organizations.
The aid will be channeled to areas in need through information by mentions shown in the Twitter account. “However, the committee will send volunteers in advance to conduct a survey to the area to check the condition of the field and the victim,” said Aslim Nur Hasan, one of the caretakers of the post.
